Fortunately for Maui, his father found him more endearing than his mother did, and gave him a magic fishing hook. Finally, his mother got fed up and sent him away to his father Mekea, who was the lord of the underworld. In response, he acted out for attention, tangling his brother’s fishing lines and engaging in other such hijinx. He had a lot of siblings, so she couldn’t quite give him the time of day. Maui is the name of a popular Hawaiian island-but did you know it’s also the name of the polynesian trickster god? Maui literally means “little thing” in Hawaiian, and it refers to the fact that Maui’s mother was not particularly fond of him. After the log plummets down the chute, you’ll be immersed in the world of this trickster figure from the American South. In any case, since you most likely won’t find the movie, you can experience the ride at Disney theme parks: Log Mountain. Since rabbits are comfortable prancing between the briars, Brer Rabbit outruns Brer Fox. He pleads with the fox not to throw him the briar patch, which of course Brer Fox to do just that. But clever Brer Rabbit won’t get eaten at the end of this tale. Kicking and punching the tar baby, Brer Rabbit gets stuck…which is exactly what the hungry Brer Fox was hoping for. In his most popular story, Brer Rabbit faces off against a tar baby, whose silence infuriates him. Like many tricksters, Brer Rabbit uses his brains over his brawn, which somewhat speaks to the difficulty slaves faced in their physical subjugation to Southern plantation owners. ![]() 5: Brer Rabbit (American)īrer Rabbit is a figure right out of American folklore and featured in the Disney Movie Song of the South (good luck getting your hands on a copy-it’s out of production). Come Ragnarok, Loki will break free from his bonds and fight against the gods, alongside Fenrir and Jörmungandr (his children). ![]() Ultimately, any positive connection he has with the other gods ends when they decide to bind him with the entrails of his sons. Throughout Norse mythological cycles, he shape shifts into a variety of creatures such as a salmon, a fly, a horse, and an old man. Loki’s relationship with the other gods was sometimes good and sometimes bad. Loki is quite the shape-shifter, because he is also the mother of Sleipnir, Odin’s eight-legged horse. Through his union to Angrboda (herself a jotunn, a type of undefined creature), he is also the father of the great wolf Fenrir, the world-serpent Jörmungandr, and Hel, the goddess of the underworld. Loki is the trickster-god from the Norse pantheon. As Africans were enslaved and brought to North America and the Caribbean, they brought along these trickster narratives, some of which became stories about Brer Rabbit (featured later in this list). Oftentimes his antics are beneficial for mankind, such as the way he obtained rain. Though they are not codified in written, but rather extend to a diverse range of verbal retellings, most of them celebrate his shape-shifting abilities and clever wit, which he leverages to get what he wants out of creatures and beings who are much bigger than he is. ![]() He is most commonly featured in the narratives from the Ashanti people of Ghana. 1: Anansi the Spider (African)Īnansi the Spider is probably one of the most recognizable trickster figures in the world repository of folklore. Let’s take a look now at some of the more memorable mischief-makers of world folklore, as we learn about these 9 mythological tricksters from around the world. In fact, there is good cause to say that many of the amusing trickster figures of modern day (such as Bugs Bunny) are descendants of these original tricksters. From tribal Africa to ancient Greece to Baroque France, these trickster figures carry both an entertainment and didactic function they make us smile, and help us understand how certain phenomena came to be-through their ruses, or as fallouts from those hijinx. Though their motivations can range from selfish to selfless, their clever ruses have delighted listeners through the ages. Trickster figures abound in folklore around the world. ![]() That's because we use natural vegetables and fruits, including pineapple, kale, oranges, and so much more. Invest in quality once (“buy once, cry once”), and you’ll be able to enjoy it for decades to come, moving it from one Canon body (or EF mount camera) to the next EF camera or even RF with an adapter. Keep in mind a good lens can last a lifetime. Some of the best lenses on the market, such as the “L” series from Canon, can cost thousands of dollars. That means a flexible lens that works well in a variety of situations (also, I usually don’t have the luxury of being able to change lenses on the go, so I usually need a do-it-all). We are often, if not always, time constrained. On the other hand if you’re shooting a documentary you may not necessarily know where your subject is going to move, so a stabilized telephoto on your shoulder may work best.įor Stark Insider, we shoot food & wine, backstage theater, experimental short films and sit-down interview videos. Without lens stabilization you’ll get what’s called “micro-jiggles” when shooting handheld. On Canon lenses that feature is usually denoted with “IS” in the model name. If you’re getting into DSLR video for the first time I highly recommend you look for a lens with image stabilization. If you own a newer Canon mirrorless like the EOS RP, R3, R5/R5C, R6, R7, R8 or R10 (Canon has been on a mirrorless bender of late!) rest assured you can use any of the RF lenses natively, of course, and the EF ones using an inexpensive EF to RF adapter. We found these lenses to consistently be some of the best performing when shooting video. One thing I’ve learned: a lens made primarily for taking photos may not necessarily be the best for video. Pair it with the Sigma 50-100mm and you’ve got a lot of coverage for your next video or film project. Otherwise, it’s an absolutely exceptional lens. Note though you’ll need a stabilizer like a gimbal or tripod as this Sigma doesn’t have image stabilization. If you want to buy ONE and only one lens get the Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8 and call it a day. Most recently I’ve been shooting Stark Insider videos and short film projects on the Panasonic Lumix GH6 with EF adapter and RED Dragon cameras. I never looked back, eventually moving to a EOS 60D and then to the brilliant auto-focus equipped 70D, and to the full-frame mirrorless Canon EOS R5. First using an old school Canon Vixia camcorder then in 2010 everything changed when I bought the EOS Rebel T2i and entered the world of DSLR video. I’ve been shooting video for about eighteen years. On the other, these new cards can also prove themselves useless and even block the sequences you were building before.įor example, you might have a sequence that is only missing an Ace. On one hand, by adding new cards to the game, the Stock Pile may provide you with more options to build sequences and even give you the last one you need to send a stack into the foundations. ![]() The Stock Pile is a tricky feature in a game of Solitaire Spider as it adds one card to every column and you cannot predict which cards will be added or their position. ![]() It may cost you a move and, thus, some points, but it can also get you closer to victory. You can break this last stack and take the cards you need to complete the first one and send it to the Foundations. That is, look at the partial one-suit sequences you might have and try to merge them into single stacks.įor example, let’s say you have an almost completed sequence, and you are missing only a 2 and an Ace, but in another column, you have a partial stack starting with a 4 and ending with an Ace. Once you have your tableau organized, the next step should be to rearrange the columns. It is also a good opportunity to check which cards you are still missing to complete any sequence so you can focus on finding them in the following moves. If you have any mixed sequences, try to deconstruct them and turn them into one-suit stacks only if possible. Take a good look at all the cards you have facing forward and any sequences, mixed or with only one suit, that you might have already. ![]() Use any empty space as support to do it, if you have any available. Whenever the opportunity presents itself, do not hesitate to stop for a moment and focus on cleaning up and organizing your stacks instead of trying to move forward. However, for the same reasons, it is one of the worst possible cards to place in an empty space as it will lock it and prevent its further use until that King’s sequence is completed and sent to the Foundations. As they are the base of the sequences, the only way to access the cards underneath them is by either completing their sequences or moving them to an empty space. Kings are the trickiest cards in a game of Solitaire Spider. This tip comes as a continuation of the previous. If you send a card there without any prospects of removing it soon, you will lose that space and its usefulness. The point is to turn it into a useful tool and use it to your advantage throughout the game. However, you need to be smart to take full advantage of them.Ĭhoose to place a card in an empty space only if you will be able to take it out of there again in a couple of moves. And the more you are able to empty, the better, although this is easier said than done.Įmpty spaces can be filled with any card, which can be very useful when trying to rearrange or unlock sequences and cards. Empty columnsĮxpert players consider emptying columns as one of the best Solitaire Spider tips that beginners should have in mind. It may also help you reveal more cards, especially if you already have an idea of which cards may be facing down.Ĭreating a mixed stack might also lead you to an empty column, which can be more useful in the long run than having a partial sequence of one suit. In some situations, building a mixed stack can unlock important cards to create or complete other sequences and advance in the game. You should always keep in mind the evolution of the game, instead of focusing on the moment. 2.But do not lose sight of the overall gameĪlthough building stacks of the same suit is one of the most important Solitaire Spider tips to increase your chances of winning the game, you still should take into account the overall disposition of the cards on the tableau. The quicker your complete one, the more cards you can reveal, and the easier it will be to juggle the remaining ones to create the missing sequences. Thus, your primary focus should be to build sequences by suit right from the beginning. At one point or another, you will have to deconstruct them which can become progressively harder throughout the game. It is possible to create mixed sequences within the tableau, but these cannot be moved around or sent to the Foundations even if completed. To build the Foundations and win the game, you must first create full sequences, by suit, in descending order (from the King to the Ace) on the tableau. In fact, you can tilt the odds in your favor with simple Solitaire Spider tips and strategies from regular players, who have learned by experience all the tricks of the game. It is not a very promising number, but it is not a reason to feel dejected either. The odds of winning a game of Solitaire Spider are usually 1 in every 3 games when more than one suit is used. What was the level of your involvement and how did the show differ from the comic strip/game? The Sam & Max TV series followed soon after this. How did you first get involved at LucasArts?Īctually the first Sam & Max comic drew the attention of an acquaintance who passed my name to the Art Director at Lucas Gary Winnick. I banged out a few more after that but it would be another five years until I would create the first Sam & Max comic book. At one point I decided to try a Sam & Max strip and I cobbled it together the night before the deadline. I also did a Late Night parody strip and another that told how to make the school paper into a kite. The first was Donut Driver, based on a night shift job I had for a few months. Sam & Max was not the first strip I did in the school paper though. But the first time they were published was in my art school newspaper. ![]() I did my own Sam & Max comic books when I was a kid. ![]() In what form where they first introduced to audiences? They’ve gotten a bit sharper and more streamlined over the years. Sam & Max were visually very soft and doughy in their first comic. Have they changed much from their initial design over the years? That mocking self-awareness has been their style ever since. Dave lost interest in Sam & Max and gave me the characters for my birthday one year. The characters would make fun of the way they were drawn and forget their own names, and over-explain everything they did. When he would leave his unfinished comics within my reach I would draw the rest of the story in a mocking parody of his style. He created a detective duo called Sam & Max. My kid brother Dave and I would do our own comics as kids. Where did the idea for Sam & Max come from? I appreciate the opportunities they gave me but I never quite found my style doing "straight" comics. I did a sword and sorcery book and a mini-series based on a kooky set of toys that never actually came out. I did a bunch of unremarkable pencilling jobs for them. Leaks from any part of your tank can cause about a 50% loss of its total compressed air production. The failure to carry out this process regularly will cause accumulations of water and corrosive elements. Manufacturers often advise operators to open the tank’s drain valve after using the compressor. Also, air leaks from compressor tanks can be excessive with corrosion.Īpart from weather effects, the common cause of an air tank’s corrosion is the residual water from condensate. Early discovery and regular inspections with the checklist can ensure that your air tank’s cover is intact. This mistake causes air to drain out of the compression tank and lose pressure. However, a piston ring failure might affect other components inside of the cylinder. With regular inspections of air tube fittings, operators can attach them firmly to their rightful positions. ![]() Except they can confirm that both pumps and rings are operating very well, the valve plate seal might be the source of the leak.Īnother way of detecting loss of pressure from piston rings is when air or oil comes out from the oil fill tube. Usually, technicians either rebuild or replace the pumps with worn seals. This condition often reduces the pump’s efficiency to optimize the production of compressed air. ![]() When rings are defective, pumps will lose pressure and compression strength. However, the air compressor not building enough pressure might be from its pump’s defective rings. They prevent excess oil from flowing into the compressor’s cylinders. The rings of a compressor’s pump act as seals. This unit also has a filter that restricts dust particles from entering into the compressor tank. It’s the compressor pump that sucks atmospheric air through its intake valve. Regardless of how long I ran the air compressor, the problem continued until a pressure switch replacement.Ĭompressor Not Building Pressure? – Check Pump Piston Rings The leakage prevented pressure build-up beyond a certain level. I had a faulty thermal cut-off switch when my portable Bostitch air compressor will not build pressure. However, a continuous overheating of the motor might burn your air compressor’s capacitors too.Ī typical example is when pressure switches are defective. The air compressor motor should shut down automatically. When air compressors pass their cut-out pressure points, it could lead to overheating of the motor. If your air compressor won’t reach pressure, the faulty switch needs a replacement. ![]() The differential pressure of compression systems is the variation between the cut-in and the cut-out pressure.
